CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“Dan, why can’t we leave now with what we have?” Randy asked

“A few thousand are you kidding? I want some real money. When that banker gets back we’ll get a half million.”

“The longer we’re here the greater the chances we’ll get caught.”

“By who? We’re okay, no one here is going to risk dying by doing something stupid.”

“Not that but what if people come to the door. How long can we keep from being detected?”

“As long as is necessary.” Randy walked away shaking his head.

“He could be right you know,” Ariel said. ‘The longer you’re here the odds start to turn against you.”

“The odds are never against me,” Dan said as he instinctively peeked through the blinds to the street that was deserted. “You see, nothing. That’s the problem with living in a mansion with a long driveway on a deserted street. No one can see what’s going on inside.” He turned, chuckled, lit up a cigarette and sat on the arm of a couch with the gun in his hand. He was dangerous and wouldn’t hesitate to shoot any or all of them. They knew that and had done nothing to irritate or rile him.

“Are you okay, Will?” Lexi asked. His asthma was always a concern for her. He could have an attack in an instant without any warning. Air quality was a factor, of course, but emotional stress could also do it. So, she kept a close eye on her husband.

“I’m fine, Lexi. I’m not an invalid.”

“I never said you were.”

“But you treat me like one.”

“I worry about you, Will.” He sighed.

“I know, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have snapped at you. I know you just want to help. He lowered his head.

“Forget it, just relax and don’t let any of this bother you.” Will nodded.

“When will he get here?” Warren whispered to Ariel.

“Who?”

“Your banker, who else?”

“Oh, him, well, I don’t know for sure.”

“What do you mean you don’t know?”

“He tells me a day but sometimes he stays longer.”

“Did you give him a definite day?”

“No because I didn’t know we were going to be taken hostage.”

“He’s not going to be happy if the banker isn’t here soon.”

“Not much I can do about that.”

“I have to say you have a very cavalier attitude towards the whole thing.”

“Warren, there’s simply nothing I can do to affect the outcome or get my banker back here sooner. If wringing my hands and displaying great angst would help then I would do those things.”

“Okay, I get it, I won’t mention it again.”

“Look, if I could do something I would.”

“I know, I should relax but I get antsy sometimes.”

“I know that for sure.”

“What do you mean?”

“You’re on edge about everything.”

“No, I’m not.” Ariel looked at Warren and grinned. “What?”

“Last month you were waiting for a letter from a colleague at Rutgers, remember?”

“Yes,” Warren said softly.

“Remember the day came or you thought it was the day and you started running out to the mailbox, tripped and your titanium leg came off so you hopped the rest of the way and the letter wasn’t there.
